Consider the style or decor of your home, work out what sort of look or feel you are going for. Is it urban, contemporary, modern or traditional? Once you've identified the look that you like and works well with the other rooms in your home the choice of colour becomes much easier.

Decide on the mood you want the room to evoke.

Look closely at the natural light exposure the room has. Exposure to bright sunlight may influence you towards a choice of cooler shades. When selecting your choice of colours make sure you check in daylight and artificial light.

The colour chosen should be compatible with the fixtures which are difficult to replace easily, for example the fire surrounds, furniture, or carpets and curtains inside the home. When planning the paint job outside consider the style of the brickwork, masonry and other homes in the neighbourhood. Don't forget this principle applies when looking at decorating the fences and sheds in our gardens too.

A handy tip would be to collect swatches and samples of fabrics, paint colour, carpets etc together on a storyboard to help inspire your creativity and make sure you are happy with your final selection.

Before you start your paint job make sure you have bought enough paint.

Clear as many items out of the room beforehand and make sure the room is well ventilated throughout your painting job. Make sure you allocate enough time for the job to be done well. This way you'll be stress free and have more fun!

Make sure you buy a top quality paint. The best laid plans and efforts can be ruined by the use of poor quality materials. Paints made using advanced pure acrylic resins are increasingly the paint of choice for many surfaces - ask the salesperson at your local retail store if in doubt.
